Pakenham Anxiety Disorder Seminar

An Anxiety Disorder Seminar was run on Sunday the 17th June 2001 in country Pakenham, by Renee Knight. It was the first seminar organised by a former anxiety sufferer, who is now a Community Services student (Welfare).

Four of the speakers were provided by ADAVIC's Anna Kouloubos who organised them on very short notice, due to unforeseen circumstances on my behalf. They were: Maria Villani, who introduced the Anxiety Disorder Association of Victoria and also shared some of the how's and why's she is involved with the organisation. Then there was Megan Sloley, who's story of recovery was power packed, and was appreciated by a number of sufferers. Next was Bev Aisbett, who shared how fear and anxiety had such a grip on her life, but later let her to designing a program, writing books and helping others in a positive way. Finally from ADAVIC was Michel Ross who gave a very informative and helpful talk, about recognising anxiety in children, she also gave some helpful guidelines for parents. Dr. Kate Moore from Deakin University gave a detailed and enlightening talk on, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which was well received by a number of sufferers, and others found they had thinking patterns that fitted into this category.

Comments from guests were positive and very encouraging. Some learnt a lot, others made contact with ADAVIC, some have picked up the order forms for Bev Aisbett's home study program, and others signified interest in support groups or counselling. Many commented on the home made scones, jam and cream and how well the day was catered for, (it wasn't just a cuppa and biscuit) and that the venue was well organised and comfortable. The ladies of the Pakenham Uniting Church catering team were responsible for making the scones!

There was childcare provided on the day, with the help of other students who also manned the kitchen, whose help was appreciated and invaluable. THANKS. See you all at the next seminar in 2002.
